A Natural Approach to Seasonal Allergies

Seasonal allergies, sometimes referred to as "hay fever" are allergy symptoms that happen during certain times of the year, usually when outdoor molds release their spores, and trees, grasses, and weeds release tiny pollen particles into the air to fertilize other plants.

The immune systems of people who are allergic to mold spores or pollen treat these particles (called allergens) as invaders and release chemicals, including histamine, into the bloodstream to defend against them. It's the release of these chemicals that causes allergy symptoms.

There are several treatments for seasonal allergies, depending on how severe the symptoms are. If certain seasons cause symptoms, keep the windows closed, use air conditioning if possible, and stay indoors when pollen/mold/weed counts are high.

If reducing exposure isn't possible or is ineffective, medications can help ease allergy symptoms. Common treatments include decongestants, antihistamines, and nasal steroid sprays.  Unfortunately, these treatments often come with side effects.  For instance, decongestants should be used with caution in people with high blood pressure, antihistamines cause drowsiness and long term use has been linked to increased risk of dementia. Nasal steroid sprays can be beneficial short term, it is recommended they not be used long term as they can cause nasal irritation, yeast overgrowth, and nasal polyps.

Root Cause and Natural Approach

At the root of an allergic response is the release of histamine by mast cells.  The histamine triggers an inflammatory response that causes the allergy symptoms.  If you suffer from seasonal allergies for a brief time period, like a week or two, and don’t mind the side effects of the treatments mentioned above they can often provide adequate relief. However, if you are looking for a more natural product that does not cause drowsiness and the other side effects discussed above, we highly recommend Natural D-Hist (by Ortho-Molecular).  This is the most effective nutritional product we have found for allergies.

Natural D-Hist is a targeted blend of flavonoids, antioxidants, proteolytic enzymes and botanicals designed to provide comprehensive support for seasonal challenges caused by common environmental allergens. Natural D- Hist includes quercetin, a powerful flavonoid, to support healthy histamine levels. Bromelain enhances the absorption of quercetin and supports mucosal tissue health. Stinging nettles leaf balances hyper-immune response and N-acetyl cysteine clears the airways by promoting normal viscosity of mucus. This powerful combination actively promotes healthy nasal and sinus passages for individuals with elevated histamine and respiratory irritation.
