Additional product information
Stillpoint contains a proprietary combination herbal supplement Relora (Phellodendron and Magnolia extracts), which is reported to help improve cortisol balance and to improve symptoms related to stress-induced eating. In addition Relora has been reported to reduce cortisol spikes due to athletic training that can lead to reduced performance. Stillpoint also contains the herbal extract Evodia (Evodia rutaecarpa), which is reported to help improve neurochemical balance and improve insulin regulation. Stillpoint contains the nutrients 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP), B6 and vitamin C. 5-HTP is included to help balance serotonin levels and reduce carbohydrate and sugar cravings, commonly reported in stress-related disorders. Pyridoxine-5-phosphate is an active form of pyridoxine, which is used to help improve neurological function and to improve methylation reactions.
Stress is caused by internal or external factors that disrupt an individual’s homeostasis and well-being. Chronic stress increases the adrenal output of glucocorticoids, including cortisol. These factors are capable of affecting health and lead to a variety of physiologic consequences, such as impaired glucose regulation and insulin sensitivity, deposition of visceral (belly) fat weight gain, cardiovascular complications including hypertension and lipid imbalances, chronic inflammatory conditions like osteoarthritis and autoimmunity, immune disturbances, sleep loss, bone loss, thyroid and other hormonal imbalances and imbalances in neurochemistry, including serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine.
With elevations in cortisol, over time, serotonin levels drop, leading to feelings of anxiety, nervousness, and depression. As serotonin goes down, sleep patterns can be altered due to disruptions in melatonin release. The shift in sleep and serotonin levels leads to a chronic craving for comfort foods, usually foods that are high in carbohydrates and sugars (like chocolate, chips, and pretzels). Thyroid hormone levels also may become imbalanced, leading to a reduction in energy levels and metabolism. Thyroid hormones help regulate insulin and also signal the liver to increase the breakdown of cholesterol. When the thyroid hormones are low, carbohydrates and fats get stored as body fat. Specifically, cortisol causes a decrease in the conversion from thyroxin (T4) to triiodothryonine (T3). In addition, reduced sleep will trigger the production of more thyroid-binding globulin, lowering the amount of available thyroid hormone to be used to drive metabolic function.
