Benefits at a Glance
Antioxidant for immune system support
Essential element in metabolic pathways
Helps the body prevent cellular damage from free radicals
Selenium is a natural antioxidant that delays the oxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids and preserves the elasticity of tissue. Selenium is required for the production of certain prostaglandins, which promote healthy blood flow. In synergy with vitamin E, selenium promotes healthy growth and fertility, and improves the function of certain energy producing cells. Selenium also provides support for the immune system.
Selenium protects normal cell function by supporting the body's natural defenses and scavenging harmful free radicals.
Food processing and selenium depletion in the soil have contributed to a decrease in the amount of selenium in our food supply.
While selenium can be toxic in high doses, it is now recognized as an important nutritional trace mineral. Selenium plays an important role in detoxification and as an antioxidant in the body. Some of the uses of selenium as a dietary supplement for health include immune regulation, thyroid health, and heart and blood vessel health.
Those with an increased need for selenium include individuals with:
- Bronchial Asthma
- Cancer or a history of cancer; use of chemotherapy
- Cardiovascular problems, including atherosclerosis
- Immune imbalances
- Thyroid imbalances
- Metabolic syndrome
The following drugs can cause a depletion of selenium:
- Oral Contraceptives
- Valproic acid
We do not recommend long term supplementation with selenium unless you have been tested for a deficiency. Please contact us for details on nutrient testing.
