Understanding Nutrition  ▶ Supplement Facts  ▶

A recent meta-analysis involving 9 randomized controlled trials has revealed that probiotics maintain healthy immune and nasal function. Probiotic IMM provides 5 billion CFU per serving of the beneficial bacteria Bifidobacterium longum, BB536, Bifidobacterium lactis, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus casei and Lactobacillus plantarum. These strains provide particular support for a healthy immune response and immunoglobulin function. B. longum BB536 is a shelf stable, top-selling probiotic in Japan, supported in the literature by over 25 human trials and 30 animal studies. Double blind, placebo-controlled trials indicate that B. longum BB536 supplementation maintains GI bacteria balance, supporting immune function and maintaining eye, nose and throat health. In another randomized double blind, placebo-controlled trial, L. acidophilus and B. lactis showed support for nasal function and maintained healthy eosinophil activity within the nasal lining. Research involving B. bifidum, L. casei and L. plantarum also suggests that these strains maintain healthy cytokine production, IgE function and mast cell integrity. Probiotic IMM is designed to support immune health and maintain normal eye, nasal and throat function, including healthy cytokine production, IgE function and mast cell integrity.

Hippocrates is credited with saying, “All disease begins in the gut.” Research over the last decade has revealed that gut health is the cornerstone to overall health and a strong immune system. This is because a healthy gut plays such a critical role in overall health. For instance, the beneficial bacteria in the gut help synthesize vitamin B1, B2, B3, B6, B12, folic acid, biotin and vitamin K and help metabolize certain drugs.

Stress, a poor diet, contaminated food, chlorinated water, antibiotics, and numerous other factors can alter the bacterial flora in the intestinal tract. Overgrowth of bad bacteria in the intestines can be a contributing factor to many chronic diseases and stress the body’s immune system.

When you take into account the diet of most Americans consisting of little fiber and an excess of sugar, salt, and processed foods, it's easy to understand how pathogenic bacteria can gain a strong foothold. To make matters worse, very few people get enough vegetables and/or beneficial essential fatty acids such as those found in certain fish (including salmon, mackerel, and herring) and flaxseed.

Imbalanced bacteria in the intestines support the growth of pathogenic bacteria, which are constantly spewing toxins into the system. Additionally, these pathogenic bacteria and toxins can damage the intestines, resulting in proteins from undigested food getting into the bloodstream. In turn, this causes your immune system to work overtime just to keep things under control and can eventually result in autoimmune disease.

The best method of establishing and maintaining a healthy bacterial flora is the consumption of fermented foods like homemade sauerkraut, yogurt, consuming plenty of fiber and resistant starch.

For most people taking a high quality probiotic is important as well, especially if you have a chronic disease, suffer from allergies, or have any type of autoimmune issues.
