Melatonin is a hormone produced by the pineal gland, the organ which regulates the body's sleep/wake cycle. The hormone is secreted in a circadian rhythm by enzymes, which are activated by darkness and depressed by light.
Melatonin nutritionally augments the natural functioning of the pineal gland.
Melatonin is a hormone naturally produced in the body. It is manufactured from tryptophan by the pineal gland in the brain. Melatonin plays an important role in the sleep cycle. It also influences the immune system and functions as an antioxidant.
Factors that can cause melatonin to be low include:
- Lack of exposure to natural light during the day
- Exposure to light at night
- Working night shifts
- Jet lag or travel and time zone changes
- Lack of sleep
You may find supplementing with Melatonin beneficial when traveling across time zones, and for night shift workers. I also recommend you incorporate other good sleep habits like avoiding television or computer work before bed. I recommend this product before moving to prescription sleep products as melatonin does not have addictive qualities or withdrawal symptoms. It also offers other advantages as it has antioxidant properties.
When supplementing, you may find it beneficial to take melatonin capsules 1 hour prior to bedtime and use melatonin liquid if you wake up in the middle of the night, as the liquid is lower dose but faster acting therefore helping you get back to sleep but avoiding high levels in the morning.
