I like this product because it combines plant sterols and red yeast rice, both of which have been demonstrated to have a LDL cholesterol lowering effect.
The plant sterols are interesting as they seem to work on just about everyone. There is consistent data to show a LDL lowering of about 10%. Most studies seem to indicate plant sterols are most effective in doses of at least 1g per day. Since the average American only gets about 80mg of plant sterols per day and this product provides 800mg per day, it is a good supplement to make up for any shortage in the diet.
Red Yeast Rice seems to be even more interesting as it is a fermentation product of rice. It has been used for years in making of rice wine and for its medicinal properties. Clinical studies report lowering of total and LDL cholesterol and triglycerides while increasing HDL cholesterol, without the side effects associated with the statins, including myopathy, rhabdomyolysis and hepatotoxicity.
A 2010 clinical study published in the American Journal of Cardiology reported that in 43 adults with dyslipidemia, treatment with red yeast rice (2,400mg twice daily) decreased the LDL-C by 30% compared to pravastatin (20mg twice daily) at 27% (Halbert et al, 2010). Of note was incidence of withdrawal from the study due to myalgia was 5% (1 of 21) in the red yeast rice group and 9% (2 of 22) in the pravastatin group.
